Guns drawn as Flying Squad, APs clash in Kisumu over illicit liquor

Two police units in Kisumu; Administration Police and Flying Squad, almost exchanged fire in public following the seizure of illegal liquor on Thursday.

The Administration Police impounded 1200 litres of illicit brew being ferried by a Probox allegedly guarded and escorted by the Flying Squad.

The Uganda-made illicit brew in 100 boxes with sachets of Coffee spirit, Simba Waragi and Kitoko were on their way to the lakeside city for sale.

Kisumu County police commander John Kamau said the brew, with a street value of Ksh.360,000 was nabbed when officers at the Kisumu Port flagged down the vehicle but the driver declined to stop.

They gave chase but the driver lost control and rammed on a guardrail before escaping. It was then that matters got complicated as the two units had a standoff as APs tried to tow the car but the Flying Squad group could hear none of it.

“AP tried to secure the vehicle but the Flying Squad guys that were in another car, refused and guns were cocked as both sides held their ground. It was then that AP called for reinforcement that the situation eased,” said a witness.

The Kisumu County Commander held a closed door meeting with the AP and Flying Squad commanders for over an hour at the central police station.

Neither Kamau nor the AP Regional Commander Joseph Keitany addressed the media about the stand off.
