Assailant who stormed DPs Sugoi home killed

A lone assailant who stormed Deputy President William Ruto’s rural home in Sugoi, Uasin Gishu County has been killed by elite Recce Squad officers early Sunday morning after an 18-hour siege.

According to Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, Recce Squad officers shot dead the unidentified gunman at 5am.

IG Boinnet said the officers waited out the whole night until the gunman who was armed with an AK-47 rifle got fatigued before they struck and took him down.

However, confusion still reigns over what really transpired at the DP’s home, amid conflicting reports, with the IG earlier issuing a statement saying the man involved in the attack was wilding a machete.

Saturday update:

More police officers have been deployed to Deputy President William Ruto’s Sugoi home in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu following a morning attack that left one police officer seriously injured after he was shot by armed assailants.

The additional officers are drawn from the General Service Unit (GSU) elite squad, Recce, that was tasked to flush out three attackers said to have raided the DP’s home on Saturday (July 29) morning.

According to reporters on site, gunshots rented the air for the better part of Saturday (July 29) afternoon as police were reportedly battling the attackers.

The number of attackers, who are said to be armed, was reported as two but their mission remains unclear.

Police are yet to give an official communication on the operation.

Rift Valley Regional Coordinator, Wanyama Musiambu, and Uasin Gishu County Commissioner, Abdi Hassan, are some of the top security officers who arrived at the scene.

On Saturday morning (July 29) reports indicated that a General Service Unit (GSU) officer had been shot and seriously injured in the attack.

The officer’s gun was allegedly picked by the attackers.

The DP was not at home during the attack that occurred shortly after he left for Kitale for a rally with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
