Gusii community challenged to embrace reading culture

The Gusii community has been encouraged to embrace the culture of reading in order to broaden their knowledge.

This will be achieved by equipping schools and community libraries from the region with various books in order to assist those interested in reading access them with ease.

Speaking on Friday, March 15 at a book donation exercise held at Nyabururu Parish, an event organized by The Better World Trust and MKIDA Foundation, Bishop Joseph Obanyi of the Kakamega Diocese appealed to more donors and well-wishers to chip in and help in equipping those libraries.

“The entire world now is embracing technology where people don’t need to carry loads of books to read while on the move, it is high time donors like MKIDA and Better World Trust and Books for Africa embrace use of technology and offer books in soft copy for such readers. Eight years from now if the laptop distribution project in Kenya materializes, students who were introduced to E-Learning at a tender age will find it difficult reading books,” said Bishop Joseph Obanyi.

MKIDA Foundation representative, Samuel Okwoyo, on the other hand said a total of 19 schools, primary, secondary and colleges from Gusii region will benefit from the donation whereby each school will get between 400-500 books to be put in their libraries.

“MKIDA’s goal is to make a difference by giving back to the community and we believe that if all gave just a little, we collectively will make the world a better place especially for the children,” said Okwoyo.

Okwoyo further urged the head teachers and principals of the schools which received the donation to ensure that the books are not redirected to private or personal institutions saying that whoever will be found doing that will be held culpable.
