Hailstones destroy over 100 acres of tea

Over 100 acres of tea plantations have been destroyed following heavy rains accompanied by hailstones that pounded Cheptiret and Kamonjil areas in Nandi county Thursday night.

Farmers of Chepterit and Kamonjil areas say the storms also destroyed tea, maize, vegetables among other crops.

”We expected a huge harvest owing to the heavy rains that pounded the area but instead we have lost hundreds of kilograms of tea leaves due to the hailstones.” lamented the farmers.

The farmers may have to wait for more than three months before the tea which is their main cash crop, grows well again for the next harvest.
