Happy New Year or premium tears? Kenyans await President Kenyattas speech on restrictions

Expectations are high among Kenyans about President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Saturday message on the review of current restrictions and cessation of movement measures effected to curb the spread of COVID-19.

It has been 70 days since the dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed in Kenya on March 27, 2020; since then, the government has extended the 7pm to 5am curfew several times and cessation of movement in 5 counties twice.

In April 25, the government announced the extension of the nationwide curfew for 21 days; on April 6, the government had imposed a ban on movements within the counties of Nairobi, Kilifi, Kwale, Mombasa and Mandera before an additional 21 days on May 17.

Despite the COVID-19 surge across the world, many countries on the continent have eased their lockdown restrictions.

Even European countries, the hardest hit by the novel coronavirus pandemic, began easing their measures in May.

The Ministry of Health on Friday announced that COVID-19 infections in the country had risen to 2,474 after 134 more patients tested positive for the disease.

And now, with indications that the Kenyan government may also loosen their grip on restrictions, hopeful Kenyans may just be setting the target a bit beyond the skies.
