Hate speech mongers will be dealt with decisively, says Police IG Mutyambai

Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai has warned politicians inciting violence through hate speech utterances that they risk arrest and prosecution.

While asking the public to incitement by leaders, the IG said that security agencies are on high alert following the emergence of political leaders uttering hate speech and inciting the public to violence.

“I have noted with great concern an emerging trend of political leaders recklessly uttering hate speech and inciting the public to violence,” he said in a statement. “I have given firm instructions to all police officers to deal decisively with such perpetrators.”

Mr. Mutyambai singled out social media as the medium of choice where postings and utterances are made intended to reach a wide audience of innocent readers.

“I take seriously any threats that affect security of the people and their property. The National Police Service will leave no opportunity to any leader intending to incite the general public to violence. Such incitement shall be faced with the full fore of the law,” he warned.

IG Mutyambai said all security agencies will work together to combat the spread of hate speech.
“We shall work in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies to strengthen and ensure that there are concerted efforts to enforce the law against individuals and groups attempting to cause breaches of peace, as well as risk the peoples safety and security.”
