Hawkers to be removed from Kisumu streets, says Governor Nyongo

Kisumu County government is now planning to remove all hawkers on the main streets of the city as part of ongoing renovations.

Governor Anyang Nyong’o said the county is making alternative places for the numerous traders to sell their wares.

According to the county chief, most of the hawkers are selling on the streets because they do not have better places to trade.

Governor Nyong’o, who spoke in Kisumu on Tuesday, announced that Kisumu Urban Projects is working on the expansion and refurbishments of Jubilee, Kibuye and Otonglo markets.

He stated that once these markets are ready, then the traders will get more space away from streets where they inconvenience the public.

The governor cited pavements that were made for walkways being turned into trading centres by hawkers as part of the reasons for this action.
