Health CS defends move to import Cuban doctors
Health CS Sicily Kariuki has urged Kenyans to stop politicising the government’s move to import 100 Cuban doctors.
She said the doctors will end shortage of specialised medical professionals in the country and will not take up any positions intended for Kenyan graduates.
According to Ms. Kariuki , the Cuban doctors will be on a two-year contract and the national government is in talks with counties to ensure that their Kenyan counterparts are not affected.
The CS maintained that even if all graduate doctors are absorbed by government, the country will still not be able to meet the recommended doctor patient ratio.
She was speaking in Nyeri during a visit at Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s office. On his part, the governor said 35% of his county’s budget is assigned to the health docket but lamented that the bulk of it goes to recurrent expenditure.
