Ministry confirms WHO statement as Kenya records 114 new cases

Health CAS Rashid Aman has confirmed that the World Health Organization statement on COVID-19 in Kenya could be valid.

Dr. Aman said there has been a challenge in contact tracing especially in some specific places such as Nairobi.

“We need not to feel we are out of the woods and relax, we need to give it time. If we continue with various measures we will be to navigate this era and we can say we have flattened the curve and say we are there. I urge Kenyans to observe measures put in place especially wearing of masks,” he sad during the Press briefing on Tuesday.

The WHO statement criticized Kenya’s announcement that it has begun to flatten the COVID-19 curve.

The global health body criticized Kenya’s testing strategy saying the target has been on low risk groups and some county labs have also reported shortage of testing kits.

WHO further cautioned against a rapid interpretation of the drop in COVID-19 cases in Kenya to mean that is shows a true decline in the spread of the disease.

On Tuesday, Kenya announced that 114 people had tested positive for coronavirus from 1,682 samples tested in the last 24 hours.

The Health Ministry said the total number of cases now stands at 34,315 with a cumulative sample size of 456,088.

”Counties that have recorded more than 1000 cases are Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Kajiado and Machakos,” Dr. Aman said.

21 counties fall in the bracket of 10-100 cases while those in the lowest category with only 1-10 cases are Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot.

318 recoveries were also reported in the last 24 hours raising the total number to 20,211.

No deaths were reported during the same period.
