Health Workers Issue Strike Notice

The union’s Secretary General Seth Panyako said the move follows failure by the government to honour agreements with nurses.

Speaking in Uasin Gishu County, Panyako said the government has failed to increase allowances for the nurses as well continuing to to employ others on contracts.

Panyako blamed Uasin Gishu and Mombasa governors for the crisis that is facing health institutions in their areas.

He spoke after health workers in Mombasa failed to report back to work even after their July and August salary arrears were cleared.

The County's Health Executive Tendai Mtana Lewa says the county government was carrying out investigations to identify doctors who have absconded duty but are engaging in private practise.

He said that the county government was capable of handling health matters.

Lewa also warned health workers that they will now be held responsible for the current crisis.

However in a rejoinder, the local union official Peter Maroko vowed that health workers will not resume work.

This is until the county government strikes a return to work formula with them.
