Heavy rainfall likely to intensify tomorrow, warns Met. department

The heavy rainfall being experienced in the Southern, Central and Western parts of the country is expected to continue this week, the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has warned.

The rainfall will reportedly intensify on Wednesday through to Friday before likely decreasing on Saturday.

Some of the areas expected to be affected, according to the weatherman, include; Nairobi, Narok, Kajiado, Bomet, Kericho, Nakuru, Migori, Nyamira, Kisii, Homa Bay, Kisumu and Siaya.

Busia, West Pokot, Uasin Gishu, Baringo, Nandi, Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Kakamega as well as Elgeyo Marakwet among other areas will also likely be affected.

Residents in these areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods, avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lighting strikes.

People in landslide prone areas especially over the slopes of the Aberdare ranges, Mount Kenya, and other hilly areas over the Western region have also been put on high alert.

According to the Met. Department, the heavy rainfall has led to high flows in most rivers and the grounds are already saturated with water.

“The rainfall is expected to continue throughout the month of December with occasional breaks. Flooding and landslides may therefore be triggered by any substantial amount of rainfall in low-lying areas as well as over hilly grounds,” said David Gikungu, a deputy director at KMD, in a statement released Tuesday.
