Heavy rainfall warning issued for Coast, North Eastern

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a flood alert following heavy rains that are expected to hit the Coastal region and parts of North Eastern starting today, Friday.

In their advisory, the rains are expected to last for four days in Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Tana River and two days in Mandera, Marsabit and Wajir with the coastal counties expected to experience heavy rainfall of more than 50 mm from November 2 to November 6, 2017.

“The rains are likely to cause flooding in low lying areas near the coastline, in river lines and in water repositories. The situation might worsen since a lot of water has been accumulating on the ground since November 1,” read the advisory in part.

The department further indicated that 40 mm of heavy rainfall is also expected in North Eastern from Friday November 2 to Saturday November 3, 2017.

Residents of the aforementioned areas have now been cautioned against wading through the water.

Fishermen, seafarers and ocean users have also been advised to take caution when going about their business as the rains and rough seas may reduce visibility and therefore risky for small vessels especially in deep sea.
