Help resolve Maasai Mara Varsity crisis, parent to Matiang’i

Parents and students of the Maasai Mara University have called on Education Cabinet Secretary, Dr Fred Matiang’i, to intervene and ensure lecturers and students arrested last week are not charged.

A week ago, students engaged police in running battles while protesting the assault of one of their colleagues by a boda boda rider over what was believed to be a love affair.

The student was allegedly roughed up by the boda boda rider for engaging in sexual advances with his wife.

Upon receiving the news, the students took to the streets accusing police of laxity and unwillingness to act on the matter.

The learners confronted the police and threatened to set on fire the boda bodas operating in the area if the issue was not addressed. The protests turned ugly forcing police to lob teargas to disperse them.

Several of them were arrested and booked for causing disturbance as they had blocked the busy Narok – Bomet highway.

Meitamei ole Dapash, a parent, said that the unrest at the varsity has led to its instability and is compromising the quality of education.

Several lecturers were also arrested last week with connection to a terror scare at the institution over a week ago that led to fleeing of students despite the area police boss assuring them of their safety.

Dapash, who was speaking at a Narok hotel on Tuesday, November 22 said that the Education CS should intervene and address the many unrest related challenges that have always been experienced at the University.
