Heroine and bhang concealed in buttons of dresses, kitenge cloth intercepted at JKIA

Kenya Revenue Authority officers have intercepted concealed heroine and bhang that were being smuggled through the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The taxman said the heroin was concealed in the buttons of dresses in the consignment while the bhang was wrapped in a black polythene paper concealed in an inner pocket of a Kitenge cloth.

“The heroine originated from Juba, South Sudan and was destined to Cambodia whereas the bhang had originated from Kasese in Uganda and was destined to France,” the Commissioner for Customs and Border Control said in a statement.

Both consignments are said to have been passing through an international courier service provider but were detected while passing through the non-intrusive scanners.

KRA Customs officers and those from the Multiagency Team (MAT) opened the consignments for 100% verification after the scanner showed some concealments.

The consignments were then seized after notices were issued. They have been placed in custody of the Anti-Narcotics Unit.

Smuggling and importation of prohibited goods is an offence under the East African Community Customs Management Act 2004.

KRA said it is in collaboration with other government agencies at all ports of entry to curb trade of illicit goods through the borders and other transnational economic crimes.
