High alert in Kisumu as cholera outbreak reported

Health officials in Kisumu County are on high alert after several people were admitted with cholera symptoms in different hospitals.

The county’s chief health officer, Dr Ojwang Lusi, said Seme and Kisumu West sub-counties are hard hit with the outbreak that has not claimed any life.

Lusi said most patients were treated and discharged while others are still admitted in various health facilities.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu, Lusi stated that they have taken drastic measures in an effort to contain the disease.

He mentioned that health officials are on the ground in the affected areas chlorinating water sources that are suspected to be the origin of the disease.

Lusi also banned food hawking in the affected areas and announced a closure of a market in Seme Sub-County.

He further noted that the interventions are being replicated across the county as a stopgap measure to stop further spread of the disease.
