Homa Bay MCAs in jail for allegedly assaulting their Speaker

Seven Homa Bay Members of the County Assembly accused of assaulting Speaker Elizabeth Ayoo were on Friday remanded for 14 days at the Kodiaga Maximum prison.

This follows a successful application by the prosecution before a Kisumu Magistrates Court seeking more time to conclude their investigations.

The MCAs, who presented themselves at the Nyanza Regional CID Headquarters in Kisumu on Friday morning are accused of assaulting Speaker Ayoo during session proceedings.

According to Homa Bay DCI Commander Daniel Wachira, the leaders were grilled over the October 16,2018 chaos.

The seven are; Evans Marieba (Gwasi North Ward), Phelimon Onditi (Kagan Ward), Dan Were (Kakelo Kokwanyo Ward), Paul Wamunga (North Karachuonyo Ward) Geoffrey Juma Anyango (Kabondo West Ward), Paul Adika (Lambwe Ward) and Peter Kaula (Wang’chieng Ward).

During the October incident, the Assembly sergeants saved Speaker Elizabeth Ayoo from the hands of irate MCAs who allegedly pounced on her with kicks and blows accusing her of being biased.

The speaker was accosted while reading a report from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party about changes in the county assembly leadership including the office of the majority leader.

The Assembly majority leader Walter Were Muok and Central Karachuonyo Ward MCA Julius Gaya were also arrested on Thursday evening over the same case and are detained at Central police station in Kisumu.
