Homa Bay: Village swept by water after River Rangwena broke banks

Evacuations are ongoing in Wahambla village in Homa Bay County after River Rangwena broke its banks on Tuesday night, sweeping through the village located on the outskirts of Homa Bay town.

A joint team led by Kenya Red Cross, Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lelan and Governor Gladys Wanga.

Victims of the midnight incident are being ferried to the nearby Rangwena Primary School.

Earlier, close to 500 families from Bala village in Homa Bay’s Karachuonyo Constituency sought refuge in Bala and Buru primary schools after floods swept the entire village.

The residents who are counting losses ranging from poultry livestock and crops now call on the government's intervention to end the perennial flooding in the area.

As of Tuesday, the death toll from floods that have devastated many parts of the country had almost doubled to 120.

More than 89,000 households have also been displaced and are being sheltered in over 112 camps, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said in a statement.
