Hospital official suspended after four babies die

Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua on Tuesday suspended the Kangundo Level 4 Hospital administrator and subsequently appointed an eight-member taskforce to investigate circumstances that led to the death of four babies at the health facility.

Mutua said the hospital administrator, Lawrence Mulungye, has been sent on a one-month suspension to pave way for the investigations.

Addressing a news conference at his Machakos office, Mutua said the task force would investigate what happened, who was responsible and which systems failed.

He added that the team would also give recommendations on how to improve the quality of services and health care at hospitals in the county

“The cleaning up of Machakos will continue and people who are not serious about their work and are corrupt will not be spared”, said Mutua.

The task force includes Health Minister Ms Naomi Mutue, Health Chief Officer Mr Collins Sila, Dr Maxwell Ludanyo, Dr Charles Nzioki, Dr Kirubi Kariuki, Ms Juliana Muendo, Mr Jeremiah Mutunga and Ms Jacinta Kondo.

Mutua also suspended four officers at the Kathiani Hospital for one month for alleged dereliction of duty leading to pathetic services and conditions.

They included the hospital administrator, Alice Nyamai, Mbevi Mbole (Public Health Officer), Pauline Muia (Engineering Technician) and Faith Kamanthe (Public Health Officer).

The governor also sent home the Masinga Sub county Administrator Arnold Mbole and driver, Raphael Kauwe, for allegedly attempting to divert 80 bags of cement meant for the construction of river dams in Kithyoko.

Two county inspectorate officers, Abubakar Muli and Michael Muasya, were also dismissed for collecting bribes from building contractors in the county.

This comes even as Senators were on Tuesday irked by Governor Mutua, whom they accused of belittling them by refusing to honor a summon to answer questions on corruption in the administration of his government.

The Legal Affairs Committee, chaired by Busia Senator Amos Wako, registered disappointment with the governor’s failure to appear before the committee following a petition by residents.
