Hospital risks closure as residents threaten to beat up health workers

Madiany Sub County hospital in Rarieda, Siaya County risks closure following disruption of activities in the facility by locals who complained of negligence by some health workers.

Speaking after a meeting held at the facility between residents and the county health officials on Wednesday, Siaya County Secretary of Union of Nurses, Silvester Nganda, condemned the roughing up of some health workers by the residents saying that the facility may be shut down should the residents continue intimidating the workers to extent of sending them death threats.

Nganda said that severally, the facility workers, especially healthy workers, have been harassed and threatened by the members of the community, something that has affected their output.

He further said that nurses have  done a lot in terms of delivering health services to the residents who have now turned against them issuing death threats.

Siaya County Executive Committee Member (CEC) for health Dr. Olango Onudi said that security of health workers is important just like any other Kenyan.

On Wednesday, the health and casual workers went on a go slow claiming their lives were in danger.

Rosemary Oywer, a health worker at the facility, was assaulted by the locals  for allegedly causing the death  of a 22-year-old woman who was rushed to the facility after being involved in an accident.
