Hospital staff admitted after cholera vaccine ‘given wrongly’

About 16 workers from a restaurant at Litein Mission Hospital in Kericho were hospitalized after a cholera vaccine went awry.

Confirming the incident, the hospital’s director Joshua Tonui said the vaccine was supposed to be taken orally but was administered through injection.

He said one of the hospital’s nursing officers did it “accidentally.”

The unsuspecting staff are said to have complained of abdominal pains and diarrhea shortly after.

They were take back to the facility where medical officers discovered what had transpired.

As a result, the workers were admitted to the hospital; 14 have since been discharged while two others are still under observation.

The hospital director has however assured patients that all necessary precautions are in place to avoid a similar occurrence.
