Hotel manager accused of shooting driver over parking space detained

A hotel manager accused of shooting a man dead over parking space in Kisumu will remain in police custody.

Daniel Yona Jaoko, who was a manager at Raygreen Hotel, is accused of killing Peter Otieno Ogallo over parking space at Polyview estate on August 17 this year.

The deceased worked as a driver for Modern Coast Bus Ltd in Kisumu.

On Monday, the accused appeared before Kisumu High Court Judge Fred Ochieng for bail hearing.

The court ruled that he be remanded until an independent report from a probation officer is availed in 7 days.

Justice Ochieng said the pre-bail report will determine whether he will be considered for bail.

The Prosecution led by Peter Muia had opposed the accused’s plea for bail citing his security concerns.

According to them, residents had threatened to lynch the accused if released.

They also argued that he may intimidate witnesses since detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are probing claims that he may be in possession of another firearm.

Justice Ochieng however faulted the prosecution for citing security as a reason not to release the accused.

The Judge averred that it is the responsibility of the State to provide security to all citizens.

He directed that the matter be mentioned again on October 2, 2019.
