2 Dandora churches, five residential buildings demolished

Two churches and 5 residential buildings have been demolished in Dandora under heavy police presence.

The structures are said to have been built on land that belongs to Kenya Railways.

Residents however claimed that a former chief and district officer sold the land to them and allegedly gave them allotment papers.

An eviction notice dated May this year expired on August 8.

However, the residents said they had been negotiating with Kenya Railways officials to give them time to seek alternative accommodation.

Dandora is located in the eastern part of Nairobi in Embakasi Division and is part of eight other estates that were marked for demolitions.

Others are Kaloleni, Makongeni, Mbotela, Mutindwa, Dandora, Kenyatta University villages, Lang’ata and Wilson-South C link road reserve.

In June this year, hundreds of families in Nairobi’s Kibera estate were left homeless after police evicted residents who had settled near the railway line.

The residents were woken up by the smell of tear gas which had marred the atmosphere and the heavy presence of police officers ready to evict them.

The Kenya Railways Urban Authority has maintained that structures close to the railway line are illegal and the company intends to develop the area.

Katiba Institute had moved to court in an attempt to stop the ongoing demolitions, however, Justice Elijah Obaga ruled that the case had no merit.
