Humanitarian disaster as death toll rises to 843 after Mozambique cyclone Idai
Hundreds of thousands of people are in dire need of food, water and shelter after Cyclone Idai battered Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
MOZAMBIQUE
Cyclone Idai landed on the night of March 14 near the port city of Beira, bringing heavy winds and rains.
Two major rivers, the Buzi and the Pungue, burst their banks, submerging entire villages and leaving bodies floating in the water.
The storm left 598 people killed, 1,641 nursing injuries, 112,076 houses damaged and brought down and 715,378 hectares of land of crops damaged.
About 1.85 million have been affected.1052 cases of cholera have also been registered with one death cases resulting from the outbreak.
ZIMBABWE
On March 16, the storm hit eastern Zimbabwe, where it flattened homes and flooded communities in the Chimanimani and Chipinge districts.The
The violent storm left 185 killed according to government. The U.N. migration agency puts the death toll at 259. 200 people were injured ,16,000 households dislodged and 250,000 affected by the outcome.
MALAWI
Before it arrived, the rampage brought heavy rains and flooding to the lower Shire River districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje, in Malawi’s south.
The rains continued after the storm hit, compounding the misery of tens of thousands of people.
The storm led to 60 lives being lost ,672 people injured, 19,328 households displaced and a total of 868,895 people affected.
