Hundreds displaced by floods in Taita Taveta

Hundreds of residents from four villages in Voi, Taita Taveta County have been left homeless after their houses were swept by floods on Saturday night.

More than 20 homesteads in Kaloleni, Tanzania, Msambweni and Gimba villages were hit by flash floods after River Voi burst its banks following overnight rains in the region.

Rescue teams from the Kenya Red Cross have since moved to help affected residents salvage a few belongings.

The locals are now urging the government to step in and provide basic needs to the affected families some of whom lost their entire belongings.

No deaths or injuries were reported from the incident.

The ongoing rains continue to wreak havoc in various parts of the country even as the Kenya Meteorological Department warns that the rains are set to increase.

The government on Thursday indicated that Ksh.1 billion will be required to resettle people who have been displaced by the rains.
