Hundreds Displaced in Samburu, Muhoroni After Floods Sweep Away Homes

Hundreds Displaced in Samburu, Muhoroni After Floods Sweep Away Homes

Residents were forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge elsewhere within the region as their homes were rendered uninhabitable after floods swept their houses away along with livestock and other belongings.

Learning has also been paralyzed at Yawaso High School  and Umoja Primary School after strong winds destroyed classrooms and water tanks.

Kenya Red Cross Samburu Region Coordinator Gitonga Mugambi said they are monitoring the situation and promised a swift response.

He said that they had mapped out areas that are vulnerable to floods, adding that no lives were lost.

The displacement comes a day after three people were killed by floods on Saturday in Bondo, Siaya County.

RIVER NYANDO WATERS RISING

Meanwhile, at least 80 families from Kachuodho Village in Muhoroni Sub-County, Kisumu County have been displaced following heavy rains in the area.

Residents have been forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge in churches and schools within the region.

Kenya Red Cross western region coordinator Emmanuel Owako on Sunday said the situation was getting worse by the day, warning that the waters of River Nyando were rising.

He said they were working closely with the communities to sensitize and equip them on how to manage flood disasters.

Learning has also been paralyzed, as schools are being used as shelter by the residents.
