Video: Over 100,000 displaced as floods wreak havoc

Hundreds of residents have been forced to leave their homes following floods across the country.

Transport along the Narok-Mai-Mahiu Road at Suswa was paralysed yet again on Monday evening with police asking motorists to use the Kericho-Nakuru-Nairobi Road.

A spot check by Citizen TV showed that even those who sought refuge at a church in Ngutuni, Taita Taveta County were not spared as waters rose to knee-high levels.

Movement out of the flood-hit area is also proving to be a nightmare as motorists get stuck in mud and their passengers wade through the waters.

The situation has been made worse after Tana River burst its banks sparking fears of a humanitarian crisis.

Those who made it to safety were seen trying to put up makeshift tents for their families and animals so they could have somewhere to sleep before darkness set in.

In Turkana County, a driver of a Probox escaped death by a whisker after floods almost submerged the vehicle.

The seasonal Kawasale River broke its banks turning the surrounding area into a lake.

A Kenya Red Cross report said floods have displaced 147,395 people, left 64 dead and 33 injured across the country in the past two months.

The counties with the most number of those displaced include Tana River (116,658), Garissa (7,250) and Kisumu (6,200).

Others are Mandera (4,067), Wajir (3,105) and  Turkana (2,125).
