Hundreds stranded after traders block Nakuru-Naivasha highway

Irate traders on Monday morning blocked the Nakuru-Naivasha highway in Rironi, causing a massive traffic snarl-up to demand compensation for a lorry that was destroyed in Kitui County three weeks ago.

Several social media users said hundreds of people had been stranded after their cars had their tyres deflated by the demonstrators.

The lorry was torched after a video showing Governor Charity Ngilu allegedly inciting Kitui County youth to burn down all vehicles carrying charcoal went viral.

Ngilu, speaking in vernacular, was allegedly caught on video saying; “If you see the lorries, burn them and call me,” leading to massive protests from Kiambu county transporters on Saturday, February 10 who called for the arrest of the Kitui governor for what they termed as promoting tribalism.

Governor Ngilu has since been summoned by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) over her alleged incitement remarks.
