Huruma families to receive Ksh 17,000 from government

Each of the families that lost their belongings in the Huruma estate building collapse tragedy will now receive Ksh 17,000 from the government to restart their lives.

In the exercise led by the Gender CS Sicily Kariuki, each family has been given 15,000 shillings as rent for three months and 2,000 shillings for school fees.

The victims of the Huruma tragedy that left 51 people dead and scores injured have also received household items and food stuff.

However, some who lost their loved ones after the residential flat collapsed two weeks ago lamented, saying they have not received a single penny to assist them in making funeral arrangements.

Meanwhile, two committees consisting of constructions stakeholders have been set up to investigate buildings that have failed to meet construction requirements in informal settlements in the country.

Public Works PS Paul Mwangi said 228 buildings earmarked for demolition will be brought down in seven days, mainly in Huruma, Baba Dogo and Zimmerman estates, when the ultimatum for occupants to relocate lapses.

Mwangi said the department is working with 20 other agencies to carry out the demolitions, insisting tenants of sub-standard buildings in Huruma must vacate as ordered by Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero.

Members of the public have also been advised to report about any building they feel does not meet construction standards and poses danger.

On Saturday, Governor Kidero suspended the demolition of condemned houses in Nairobi for seven days to give tenants ample time to seek alternative accommodation.

The demolition exercise of condemned buildings had entered its second day in Huruma estate, Saturday.
