Raila: I did more for Kibra as MP

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has hit out at those criticising him for not initiating development projects in Kibera in the 20 years he represented the constituency saying he did the most for the constituency during his time.

The former Kibra MP said that for most of the two decades he served as area MP, he was in the opposition.

Speaking to Willis Raburu on Citizen TV’s Power Breakfast show, the Cord principle said that most of the projects being carried out by the Jubilee Administration were initiated during his time.

“I brought toilets and water to Kibra during my time,” he said.

He belittled the works being done by the Jubilee Government saying that they only scratch the surface.

“These Jubilee people are not from heaven… taking contractors to clear roads in Kibra is nothing, it is just scratching the surface,” he quipped.

The former PM explained that he initiated the construction of the road in Kibra, however, the treasury did not release the funds.

He added that that Jubilee officials were high profile individuals in the coalition government so they cannot delink themselves from the failures of the coalition government and take credit for what is delivered now.

On whether NYS is operating like a political militia, the Cord principal said that the social work done by NYS is commendable but warned that it was not a paramilitary organization.

He added that calling upon NYS to take up arms in cases of civil unrest was unconstitutional.

Asked whether he is grooming his daughter Rosemary Odinga to vie for the Kibra parliamentary seat, Raila said that he doesn’t make decisions for his daughter.

“Kibra is a constituency in this country and everyone is free to vie,” he said, adding that his daughter has not announced candidacy in the seat.

“She is concerned with the welfare of the youth in the constituency, especially because they don’t have identity cards,” he said.

Rosemary Odinga recently led a voter and identity card registration drive in Kibra Constituency.
