‘I do not fear jail,’ Governor Sonko breaks silence on EACC investigations

Embattled Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko now says the ongoing investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over irregular awarding of garbage collection tenders is witch-hunt aimed at destroying his political ambitions.

Speaking on Saturday during World Clean Up Day in Ruai, the city boss maintained his innocence claiming his political detractors were using the investigations to discredit his leadership.

The flamboyant governor further stated that he is ready to step aside to allow for proper investigations if it comes to it.

“All these are lies…I will fight my own personal problems as Sonko,” he said.

The governor has already recorded 13 statements at EACC involving 13 companies awarded garbage collection tenders.

“We must respect investigative agencies like the DCI, DPP and EACC…and I am ready…I do not fear jail,” he added.

Sonko was on September 3 grilled at the EACC headquarters over alleged irregularities in garbage collection tenders worth over Ksh.160 million.

The governor was summoned after a report from the Nairobi County Assembly Public Accounts Committee revealed that Ksh.162 million paid to at least 11 contracted garbage collection firms could not be accounted for.
