I have no apologies over remarks at Ntimamas burial Raila

The opposition Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leader, Raila Odinga, now says he has no apologies to make following the public altercation between him and President Uhuru Kenyatta during the burial of the late William Ole Ntimama on Wednesday, September 14 in Narok.

In a statement to newsrooms, Raila says he only raised fundamental issues touching on historical injustices which need to be brought to a closer look through the implementation of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) report.

While promising to continue raising the issue, the CORD leader indicated that the report has always been shrouded in controversy adding that the Maa Community has raised the matters of lands with him on many occasions in the past.

“The TJRC report also addresses legal and institutional reforms; land reforms; tackling poverty and inequality as well as combating regional development imbalances; tackling unemployment, particularly among the youth; consolidating national cohesion and unity; transparency, protection of indigenous communities, addressing accountability and impunity. These matters are critical to our future as a nation,” read the statement in part.

Describing the President’s provocation as strange and despite the Jubilee administration blaming CORD for being disrespectful to the President, Raila maintains that he only had to remind the Jubilee leadership of the TJRC report insisting that the report should be tabled in Parliament in its original form and be fully implemented.

Raila claims that foreign members of the TJRC committee refused to sign the report when some sections were expunged on instructions of some influential figures in government who were fingered by the report.

“I raised the TJRC issue as a matter of conscience. I did it as a duty to my country and as part of my deep belief that historical injustices have occurred in Kenya and they need to be addressed as recommended in the original TJRC report.”
