I will not accept minority leader position, keep it Wetangula tells Raila

FORD-Kenya Party leader and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula has declared that he will not take back the Senate Minority Leader’s position which was dramatically snatched from him on Tuesday, March 20.

Addressing the media on Sunday from Bungoma, Mr. Wetangula hit out at NASA leader Raila Odinga, who is also the ODM Party leader, telling him to “keep the position”.

Wetangula was ousted as Senate Minority leader after NASA Senators, predominantly from the ODM Party, voted to kick him out saying they needed a “better” leader.

“I will not, even if offered by Raila Odinga and his ODM Party, take up the seat of minority leader. That is not what I bargained for, our people in Vihiga, Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Kakamega and Busia unconditionally supported Raila and gave him an overwhelming vote. Now we have seen their vote of thanks,” said Wetangula.

He added: “Let Raila and ODM keep their seat of minority and let the game begin.”

Wetangula further claimed that during a meeting of the NASA Summit called to address his ejection as minority leader, he was humiliated and embarrassed in front of  Raila Odinga.

“I was subjected to name calling, harassment and humiliation in the presence of my brother Raila Odinga and when he stood up to speak, he said nothing about what had happened. I got a distinct impression that the statements made in that meeting were orchestrated and rehearsed. Cleverly rehearsed to embarrass and pour scorn on me,” lamented Wetangula.

After the NASA summit meeting, which also included opposition allied Senators, Mr. Odinga said the coalition would hold a retreat to address Wetangula’s ouster. However, the Bungoma Senator says there is absolutely nothing to discuss.

“What is there to discuss? Absolutely nothing,” he said.

“When we supported Raila Odinga in August 2017, I did not bargain to be minority leader. It is the summit that said since I was the only principal in Parliament, I should take the position of leadership because we needed to continue a synergy between organs of the party and parliament.”

Wetangula said he will not attend the planned retreat meant to address his removal from the influential senate position.

“I shall and will not participate in that retreat because i will be subjecting myself to a goat walking into a court of hyenas to be tried and the hyenas will come laughing saying ‘where did you delay we want to deal with you immediately’…” he said.

The NASA Senators picked Siaya Senator James Orengo to replace Wetangula as Minority Leader in the Senate.
