I will not run for Nairobi Senator seat Karua

Narc-Kenya Party leader Martha Karua Karua dismissed media reports that she has dropped her presidential ambitions after reaching a deal with the CORD coalition to vie for the Nairobi Senatorial seat in the 2017 General Election.

Karua, who vied for the presidency in the 2013 General Election and finished a distant 6th, has maintained that she is still in the 2017 presidential race.

In December last year, Karua was accused of allegedly receiving a bribe from the British American Tobacco during the 2013 presidential campaigns in a bid to influence the award of a Kenya Revenue contract if she ascended to power.

She disputed allegations by a former BAT employee Paul Hopkins who sensationally told British authorities that she received about Sh7 million from the cigarette manufacturer.

Karua further defended herself saying that her campaign was above board and insisted she only received Sh2 million from Hopkins without any information that the amount was a bribe.

Hopkins had told Britain’s serious fraud office that BAT bribed politicians in a bid to block a rival firm from bagging a contract to combat tobacco smuggling.

Following the allegations, which were also reported by a UK newspaper ‘The Independent’, Karua called for investigations into BAT’s activities during the 2013 campaigns and demanded information on the final beneficiary of the KRA contract.
