IEBC Commissioners recruitment to kick off as selection panel sworn-in

The Selection Panel for the recruitment of IEBC Commissioners who will oversee the next General Election has been officially sworn-in to undertake the mandate.

The panel, which was appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta, included seven members; Dr. Elizabeth Muli, Gideon Solonka, Awori James, Elizabeth Meyo, Dorothy Kimengech, Rev. Joseph Ngumbi and Dr. Faradim Abdalla.

However, one of them; Dorothy Kimengich, — who was the Law Society of Kenya representative in the panel — did not take oath following restraining orders issued by the High Court earlier on Wednesday.

The swearing-in ceremony was presided over by Acting Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu.

In her speech, the Acting Chief Justice urged the members of the panel to conduct the recruitment task with utmost diligence, bearing in mind that they will be held to account for the team they assemble to preside over the next polls.

“You do not need me to tell you that in this country we take elections very passionately… I do hope to God that you are taking the task placed before you seriously and that you will remember that while you can cheat everybody, there are two people you will not be able to cheat; yourself and God,” said Justice Mwilu.

She added: “Please go and give us the team that will bring peace to the Republic of Kenya in August next year and the following years.”

The Selection Panel shall within seven days invite applications from qualified persons and publish the names of all applicants and their qualifications.

They will then consider the applications, shortlist and interview the applicants.

President Uhuru Kenyatta officially declared vacancies in the positions of four IEBC commissioners who left office during the last electioneering period, paving way for the formation of the selection panel.

The four commissioners who left office include; Vice Chairperson Consolata Nkatha, commissioners Margaret Mwachanya, Paul Kurgat and Roselyn Akombe.
