IEBC denies snubbing CORD, says signatures verification process on

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has refuted claims by Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) that its commissioners snubbed a planned meeting aimed at discussing the progress made in the Okoa Kenya signature verification process.

In a statement to newsrooms, IEBC said it had informed CORD beforehand of the unavailability of its commissioners on Tuesday, being the last day of the mass voter registration exercise.

“It is, therefore, wrong to state that the chairperson and the commissioners snubbed the meeting. For the record, IEBC chairperson (Ahmed Issack Hassan) personally followed the letter with a phone call to Mr. Paul Mwangi, the Chairperson of the Okoa Kenya Secretariat, to reiterate the unavailability of commissioners,” read the statement in part.

IEBC further stated that the Okoa Kenya team was received by the CEO Ezra Chiloba and a team of senior members of the Secretariat.

Led by coalition leaders Raila Odinga, Moses Wetangula and Kalonzo Musyoka, CORD members visited IEBC offices at Anniversary Towers on Tuesday seeking an update on the progress made on the signature verification exercise.

Speaking outside IEBC offices after the aborted meeting, CORD leader Raila Odinga accused the commission of sabotage saying Okoa Kenya secretariat will seat and agree on the next course of action.

Commenting on the progress made in verifying Okoa Kenya signatures, IEBC said it is in the final stages of capturing the hard copy booklets into soft copy adding that if it meets the one million threshold, as specified in Article 257 (4) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, the commission will submit the Bill to County Assemblies for consideration.

“The Commission attaches a lot of importance to this exercise and is committed to conclude the Okoa Kenya signature verification exercise soonest possible.”
