IEBC gives parties more time to submit member lists

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Friday extended the deadline for political parties to submit their membership lists from March 19th to March 27th.

The electoral body said the decision to extend the deadline was made following concerns that many political parties would not be able to comply with the Sunday deadline.

Now, political parties will continue submitting their party registers to IEBC headquarters, with the offices set to be open over the weekends until  deadline day.

The electoral agency also asked parties to submit nomination rules set for use during party primaries.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said the nomination rules and party lists will avert mischief by political parties and will also help reduce the number of disputes that may arise before the August 8 General Election.

According to the IEBC, the rules will be binding and govern individual party’s nominations process.

The nominations have been set for April 13th – April 16th, 2017.
