IEBC officials attacked in Bondo

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has indefinitely suspended the training of poll officials in Bondo Constituency following attack by rowdy youth at a polling station.

IEBC Bondo Constituency returning officer, Mr. John Matekwa, told Radio Ramogi that the youth attacked Sironya Academy where presiding officers and deputy presiding officers were due to begin their training.

“We have been forced to call off training until further notice,” Matekwa said.

Matekwa also added that the attackers broke window panes at the school and roughed up everyone on sight before taking off with the meat of a cow that was being slaughtered for lunch.

Bondo returning officer will file a report with IEBC head office and await further direction.

This comes after a section of constituency electoral officials in Nyanza region on Saturday expressed fears over their safety to conduct the repeat October 26 presidential poll following the withdrawal of National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate, Raila Odinga from the fresh election.

IEBC Commissioner Roselyn Akombe assured the county electoral officials that the commission will provide extra security to them come October 26.

“I have heard of their concerns over the security situation which is serious and I will be taking them to the commission for deliberation. We will also look at Kisumu and other counties affected to find the best way forward,” said Akombe after attending a training session in Kisumu and Homa Bay Counties on Saturday, October 14.
