IEBC publishes over 21,000 names of voters with shared ID numbers

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has published 21,149 names of registered voters with shared Identification Card numbers and another 57,603 names of unrecognized voters.

According to the electoral body Chief Executive Officer, Ezra Chiloba, the affected voters have ten days to correct anomalies failure to which they risk being left out of the voting process when Kenya goes to the ballot on Tuesday, August 8.

“The Commission wishes to notify the public that it has published the list of voters with shared National Identification Numbers. The list includes 21,149 records that bear the same ID numbers and same names and 57,603 records whose ID numbers did not match the National Registration Bureau records we had submitted for verification,” read IEBC’s statement in part.

The affected persons are required to visit the IEBC Constituency offices to correct the anomalies.

“Persons whose names are listed are requested to visit the IEBC Constituency offices where they were registered to verify and correct any discrepancies that may exist.”

“Those who will not have verified and corrected their records within 10 days from February 6, 2017, run the risk of having their names being expunged from the register of voters.”

IEBC says it will continue the process of cleaning up the voter register even after the completion of the Mass Voter Registration campaign set to conclude on February 16.

“We appeal to the public to continue being vigilant and support the Commission during this exercise.”

Cases of shared ID numbers attracted public attention after the opposition Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leader, Raila Odinga, and his co-principal, Kalonzo Musyoka, alleged to have been sharing the crucial identification document with other persons.

The details of the shared identification numbers may be accessed at www.iebc.or.ke or at the Commission’s constituency offices across the country.
