IEBC in court to stop Parliament from ‘sacking’ remaining commissioners

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has moved to court seeking to stop Parliament from removing the three remaining commissioners from office.

In a replying affidavit, the commission now claims that if the court fails to stop their removal from office, then parliament will hound them out.

The commission, through Chairman Wafula Chebukati, says it is apprehensive that the National Assembly will frustrate or stop the ongoing audit of Ksh.46 billion spent during the 2017 General Election.

“It is prudent and fair, just in the public interest, that this honourable court halt all efforts designed to frustrate the ongoing audit,” reads the affidavit.

IEBC Vice-chairperson Connie Nkatha Maina, Commissioners Margaret Mwachanya and Paul Kurgat resigned in April citing lack of confidence in the commission.
