IEBC sets Kericho Senate, Malindi Parliamentary seats by-election dates

The by-elections for the Kericho County Member of Senate and Malindi Constituency Member of National Assembly will take place on 7th March 2016.

In a press release by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries (IEBC) Political Parties are required to finalize party primaries and intra-party dispute resolutions on or before Friday 22nd January, 2016.

Presentation of nomination papers to the IEBC will be on 8th – 9th February, 2016 from 8am – 4pm.

The Kericho County Member of Senate and Malindi Member of National Assembly seats fell vacant following the resignations of Charles Keter and Dan Kazungu, respectively, on the 17th December 2015.

The announcement by the IEBC comes just hours after National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi wrote to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declaring the Malindi Parliamentary seat vacant following the resignation of area Kazungu who was appointed Mining Cabinet Secretary.

Kazungu was among the seven Cabinet Secretaries appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta last Friday after they were approved by Parliament.

The former MP made it to the Cabinet after President Kenyatta nominated him as the CS for Mining effectively replacing Najib Balala who was moved to the Ministry of Tourism in the same capacity.

Senate Speaker Ekwe Ethuro also write to the IEBC declaring the Kericho Senate seat vacant after Charles Keter was appointed Energy Cabinet Secretary.

The former Kericho Senator made it to the Cabinet after the Head of State nominated him as the CS for Energy to take over from Davis Chirchir who was suspended eight months ago over corruption allegations.

In November, President Kenyatta made a major Cabinet reshuffle in what he termed as re-organization of the government to ensure effective and efficient service delivery.
