IEBC wont contest Court of Appeal ruling

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will not contest the Court of Appeal ruling on the declaration of presidential election results at the constituency level.

In a tweet posted Saturday afternoon just a day after the outcome of the Commission’s appeal at the Appellate Court, the electoral body has said the court has now clarified on how the presidential election results will be announced during the August 8th General Election.

This comes amid calls by a section of Jubilee Party leaders urging the IEBC to appeal against the ruling.

Speaking in Turkana County on Friday, Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri and Turkana Jubilee gubernatorial candidate John Munyes faulted the Court of Appeal ruling saying their party should appeal against the verdict at the Supreme Court.

“We are asking IEBC and Jubilee since we are interested parties to contest the ruling at the Supreme Court,” said Kiunjuri moments after the outcome of the Court of Appeal ruling.

“It’s not in order. It must be contested at the Supreme Court. In the event a presiding officer gets compromised and announces erroneous results, the effect of that is to throw the country into anarchy,” added Senator Munyes.

The opposition National Super Alliance leaders have already lauded the ruling, saying the declaration will minimize chances of rigging in the presidential election.

Speaking in Bomet, Governor Isaac Ruto praised the ruling, saying it will prevent scenarios witnessed during the bungled 2007 presidential election.
