IG Mutyambai orders suspension, arrest of police officer in Lesos shooting incident

Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai on Thursday ordered the immediate arrest and suspension of a police officer involved in a shooting incident in Lesos, Nandi County.

The shooting incident ensued after a bodaboda rider carrying two pillion passengers was allegedly arrested for not wearing a face mask.

According to IG Mutyambai, other bodaboda riders then attacked the arresting officer and his colleagues and attempted to snatch a rifle while the arrested person was being escorted to Lesos Police Station.

Lazarus Kirop, a 40-year-old man, was shot and killed during this fracas, upon which the now irate crowd attempted to cause further destruction at the police station and torched the house of a senior officer, leading to the killing of two more people.

“The National Police Service of Kenya reiterates its commitment to its highest ideal of service for all, ‘Utumishi Kwa Wote’ and holds the position that no officer is allowed to take the law into their own hands,” read a statement from National Police Service Director of Communications Charles Wahong’o.

“We have informed the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for action as stipulated in law. We commit to take stem disciplinary action against any other officer found culpable.”

The statement further added: “It is the considered view of the service that all officers must abide by the law even as they execute their duties and must uphold the National Police Service mission, for a professional and people-centered police service through community partnerships for a safer society.”
