The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has congratulated President Uhuru Kenyatta for his reelection following the August 8 poll.
At the same time IGAD hailed the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission for carrying out a credible election reflecting the will of the people.
IGAD Executive Secretary Mahboub Maalim in his statement said Kenya plays a pivotal role in regional integration and socio-economic development which he expects to continue following the election.
“On behalf of IGAD Member States, the people and citizens of our entire region and on my own behalf, I wish to take this earliest opportunity to congratulate His Excellency Hon. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta on his successful election for a second term as the President of the Republic of Kenya,” Mr Maalim said.
At the same time IGAD, which is made up of eight countries including Kenya, called on aggrieved parties in the election to use legal mechanisms to seek redress?
The message comes a time the main opposition coalition, NASA failed to accept the presidential results given by the IBEC on Friday night.
“In case of any disputes related to the official results delivered by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), we urge concerned parties to use the proper and legal channels provided by the Constitution of Kenya and the laws of Kenya,” he said.
