Ignore fake Grade 3 timetable on social media, Kenyans told as anxiety persists over CBC

A document alleged to be the Grade 3 timetable for monitoring is fake, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has said.

On Friday, the examinations body urged Kenyans to ignore the document that claimed rehearsal day would be on Monday next week.

”Please ignore this fake timetable circulating in social media on Grade 3 monitoring. Under the exercise: 1. There’s no supervisor/invigilator 2. No timetable 3. Is administered by class teachers 4. No individual scores 5. All Grade 3 kids to join Grade 4,” KNEC said.

This announcement comes in the backdrop of uncertainty over the implementation of the competency based curriculum (CBC).

Queries have been raised over assessments and promotion of students to the next grade.

In August, President Uhuru Kenyatta told the third National Conference on Curriculum Reforms that there would be no more exams in primary schools.

Education CS George Magoha on Friday reiterated the President’s position urging teachers and parents to let go of the ‘obsession with examinations.’

KNA quoted him saying the Grade 3 assessment expected to start on Monday to Friday next week  will continue until the end of the term.

““From  the outcome, teachers will be able to monitor children’s progress, and focus more attention on their weaknesses. All pupils will then proceed to the next grade.

“The problem with this country is the love for examinations. This should end as we focus on producing students able and competent in the job markets,” he said.

According to Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) seeks to make learners competent in seven key areas.

They are communication and collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving, creativity and imagination, citizenship, digital literacy, learning to learn and self-efficacy.
