Illegal firearm holder surrenders rifle to Meru police

An illegal firearm holder has surrendered his G3 rifle with 40 rounds of ammunition to the police as a way restoring peace along the volatile Meru – Isiolo border.

Receiving the firearm, Meru County Commissioner Wilfred Nyagwang’a, congratulated the farmer for willingly surrendering the gun and asked others to do so.

He said that most of the farmers are afraid of being arrested but assured them that no one will be arrested as they will just register the rifles for security reasons.

The County Commissioner added that leaders will educate residents on the importance of registering their guns because some do not understand why the registration is done.

Meru North Peace Committee Chairman Charles Kamwibua encouraged those with illegal firearms to surrender to relevant authorities.

Kamwibua said there were more than 30 residents willing to surrender their firearms but were not sure if the rifles will be returned or confiscated by the police or even be arrested.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery, during his visit to Meru and Isiolo Counties, asked those with illegal firearms to register to the police as a way of restoring peace in the volatile Meru- Isiolo border.
