illegal Sugar Nabbed In Mombasa

The sugar is said to have been brought into the country illegally.

The sugar was seized at a petrol station in Changamwe area as it was being transported to an unknown destination after being sneaked out of a go down at Port Reitz.

According to the sugar directorate surveillance officer from Nairobi Lydia Chacha, the 800 bags had been repackaged into three different companies’ bags allegedly belonging to Butali, Kibos and Transmara sugar.

One person has been arrested by the police in connection to the matter as investigations to establish those behind the  continue .

This comes after Lugari member of parliament  Ayub Savula recently claimed that powerful people were in the process of importing illegal sugar in the country.

Savula said the move would affect and paralyze local sugar manufacturing companies.
