Illicit brew crackdown affecting our businesses, Migori residents

Residents of North Kamagambo in Rongo now wants the government to halt the ongoing war on illicit brew over what they termed as lack of market for their sugar cane products.

They argue that their jaggery, which has been used by producers of local brews in the area, said that they risk going without any form of income as their products is being targeted as the cause of increased illicit brews in the area.

Most parents also claim that they cannot afford to pay school fees for their children as they have been relying on the proceeds of the product sale for the same.

The residents, who tendered their complaints to leaders in Migori county during a meeting presided by Governor Okoth Obado at Tuk Jowi girls secondary school, now want the government to look into cane prices to enable them get value for their products.

On his part, Governor Obado urged residents to look for alternative market for their jaggery instead of depending on illicit liquor brewers.

Jaggery business is one of the thriving businesses in the sugarcane growing area which is alleged to have been contributed by poor pricing of sugarcane by cane industries.
