Illicit brew dens resurface in Kiambu after crackdown

Angry residents of Gatong’ora in Ruiru on Monday stormed a new second generation brew plant that had just been set up in the area and destroyed alcoholic drinks worth millions of shillings.

During the morning raid, more than 300 hundreds cartons of second generation alcohol and equipment that were being used to distill the brew were destroyed.

Residents said that they suspected some illegal business was going on in the compound after they started witnessing unusual activities as lorries kept driving in and out of the premise.

Area Member of Parliament Esther Gathogo, who joined the locals in the raid, raised a red flag over the return of illicit brew in the area.

Gathogo said some unscrupulous businessmen had embarked on the distilling and sale of illicit brew in the area retaliating they would not allow it to happen.

She warned those doing the illegal business to stop or else they would face the full force of the law for engaging in an illegal business that had already been banned by the government.

The MP added that the crackdown on illicit brew and second generation alcohol was still in force and warned the police and provincial administrators against jeopardizing the fight to end the menace.

Gatong’ora Member of the County Assembly George Gitau said the county government had partnered with the national government to ensure the war against illicit brew and second generation alcohol was won.

He commended the members of the public for taking action by destroying the illicit liquor. He encouraged them to continue with the spirit.

Illicit brew manufacturers have been put  on notice since early this year after the president declared all second generation drinks be dealt with mercylessly.
