Illicit brew slowly coming back to Migori

Residents of Kamenji region in Rongo have decried the return of illicit brew despite assurances by the government that it would not relent in the fight against the brew that has led to deaths of thousands of people.

The residents argue that jaggery production in the area has gone up leading to availability of cheap raw materials for production of the cheap, illicit liquor.

They argue that this has led to a surge in criminal activities and low education uptake by youth from the region.

Migori Deputy County Commissioner, Joseph Satia, said that the war against the liquor has been a challenge owing to the vested interest by a section of leaders who end up sabotaging security operations and raids on these dens.

Migori Governor, Okoth Obado, had been quoted defending jaggery production saying that it is the main source of livelihood for hundreds of residents.

The residents, however, want the government to intervene stop its further production on grounds that chang’aa brewers are the major benefactors.
