The burial ceremony for the late Mzee Daniel Toroitich arap Moi saw thousands of mourners gather for the final send-off at his Kabarak home in Nakuru.

They arrived at the venue from as early as 4am with the first 30,000 receiving bread and drinks from National Youth Service (NYS) officers.

There was heavy police presence with some officers patrolling the area on horses as well as vehicles.

First aid responders from St. John’s Ambulance were also on hand to help mourners in case of an emergency.

KANU Secretary General Nick Salat later said Moi’s family would open the Kabarak home for 40 days from next Wednesday to allow Kenyans to mourn the former Head of State.

The body of the late Mzee Moi was flown from Nairobi aboard a police chopper at around 7:45am and arrived at Kabarak at 8:37am.

It was placed on a gun carriage and officers from the Kenya Army, Kenya Navy and Kenya Air Force marched alongside it.

In front of the procession was Gideon Moi’s daughter Lulu and a member of the clergy.

The carriage then slowly sneaked its way to the venue for the burial service.

Leaders trickled in one by one, some of whom were ushered to the VIP dais.

At some point, when ODM leader Raila Odinga arrived, there was a small scuffle as security agents tried to stop his brother Oburu Odinga from accompanying him to the dais.

He however proceeded to enter his brother.

Similarly, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko had to wait for several minutes after his arrival at Kabarak as security officers followed protocol for seating.

When President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived at Kabarak with First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, they were received by leaders from the Kenya Navy, Kenya Defence Force and Kenya Army.

There was a moment of silence as the national anthem was played and then the Head of State proceeded to the dais.

He was accompanied by his Deputy William Ruto; Raymond Moi (Rongai MP) and Gideon Moi (Baringo Senator) as well his private secretary Jomo Gecaga.
